C-Curve Strategies with Katie Yip
The “C-Curve” is a foundational skill in the beginner repertoire and essential in understanding how to open the lower back and properly engage the Powerhouse. While initially taught as an external shape, this concept evolves into an “internal C-Curve” as we progress through the system. Ultimately, we seek to maintain the concept of the “C-Curve” even as spinal movement advances into extension, rotation, and lateral flexion.
For teachers, understanding correct pelvic placement, alignment, and positioning in the “C-Curve” position is paramount in effectively engaging the Powerhouse muscles. Equally important is the ability to assess where a client falls on the mobility-stability continuum as this will directly inform our exercise selection. When both principles are applied, we can use thoughtful programming to meet clients where they are and guide them towards steady, sustainable progress — transforming a generic session into a truly customized one.
