Tools of the Trade: Integrating the Apparatus into Individualized Programming with Katie Yip
Tools of the Trade: Integrating the Apparatus into Individualized Programming with Katie Yip
Workshop location: Pilates of Kansas City
The auxiliary apparatus in the Pilates system are designed to provide joint support, enhance proprioception, build strength, and promote smooth, controlled movement — all with the goal of making Matwork more accessible and achievable. Drawing from the principle that structure determines function, we can develop guidelines for exercise selection by examining how an apparatus’s design supports the specific purpose of an exercise. This approach helps us determine which populations each apparatus-exercise pairing best serve, and how they integrate into the broader Pilates methodology.
In this interactive workshop, you will review, refine, and learn fundamental exercises on a variety of equipment, and how each can support an individual’s unique needs. These workshops emphasize active participation, with each student teaching, practicing, and observing exercises on a variety of bodies. We will also cover hands-on cueing and principles of alignment and body placement.
By the end of the weekend, you will walk away with an expanded exercise repertoire, and a clear approach to applying the right tools to the right people — maximizing the impact of the Pilates system for every client.
Come ready to move, learn, connect, and leave feeling more confident and inspired in your teaching!

Flexion Fundamentals: Creating the "C-Curve" with Katie Yip
Flexion Fundamentals: Creating the “C-Curve”
The “C-Curve” is a foundational skill in the beginner repertoire. While it is first taught as an external shape, we elevate this concept into an internal “C-Curve” as we advance through the system - seeking to maintain the concept of the “C-Curve” even when our spines are no longer in flexion.
Enhance your teaching skills and deepen your understanding of movement principles and personalized program design in “Flexion Fundamentals: Creating the “C-Curve”. This comprehensive workshop is designed to equip Pilates teachers with the knowledge and techniques needed to improve their clients' spinal movement, flexibility, and strength in the “C-Curve” position.
In this workshop, you will:
Learn the Paradigm Principles Framework: Learn a step-by-step process of how to create exercise programs tailored towards the individual, enhancing your ability to meet each client's unique goals and needs.
Develop Assessment Skills: Gain essential skills for assessing your clients and understanding what to look for in creating their unique “C-Curve.”
Identify Movement Dysfunctions: Recognize hallmark traits of common movement dysfunctions, allowing you to address and correct them effectively.
Master New (and Old!) Exercises: Learn new exercises throughout the studio specific to creating mobility, stability, motor control, and strength with a focus on achieving the coveted “C-Curve” position.
Understand Exercise Selection: Learn the criteria for selecting exercises that best suit a client.
This workshop is ideal for instructors seeking to broaden their expertise and understand how to create individualized programs for their clients. Join us for an afternoon of knowledge, fun and community and expect to gain a solid foundation in “C-Curve” techniques!

Lower Back Injuries & Application with Katie Yip
Lower Back Injuries & Application with Katie Yip
Pilates has often been praised for its rehabilitative benefits, particularly in addressing lower back injuries through its emphasis on “core stability” exercises. While it is beyond our scope to diagnose or treat these issues, we still play a pivotal role in providing movement-based relief to clients by working around their injuries.
As the approach to treatment of low back issues shifts from passive to active methods that prioritize exercise for prevention and treatment, understanding “core stability” principles, vital for lumbar spine stability, is essential. In this workshop you will learn the three subsystems that govern lumbar spine stability and how they work in synchrony to maintain it effectively.
Gain the skills to assess, manage, and safely incorporate exercises for clients dealing with acute or chronic lower back injuries while adhering to the core tenets of the Pilates method. You will explore concepts in movement tolerance, workload tolerance, and understand how to logically progress and scale training to meet the client at their level.
Through interactive sessions, we’ll transition theory into practical application, ensuring immediate takeaways and hands-on experience applying the learned principles.
Join us in this intimate workshop limited to 10 participants to maximize engagement and learning!
