Exploring Extension with Katie Yip
Movement patterns are coordinated sequences of mobile and stable segments working together to produce efficient and effective movement. When examining the extension pattern, we must consider each joint function of the segments involved and its particular training needs to complete the pattern successfully. Our ability to reduce the pattern into its parts, and to qualitatively measure each with greater clarity and precision, provides insight how we rebuild the full pattern.
One of the hallmark traits of a good movement pattern is appropriate distribution of work across the entire body. No single segment should bear brunt of the work, but rather all segments contribute their specific role and joint function to achieve gross movement.
In this workshop we will review the components needed for full-body extension. We’ll cover joint function of the major segments involved, a framework for determining which segments of the body require more movement and which require more stability and control, and strategies for application. Teachers will utilize a full suite of apparatus and learn how to make exercise choices that support the extension pattern for the individual in front of them.
